Steps for adding fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 3 and 8 is 24
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 24 - For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 8 = 24,
2/3 = 2 × 8/3 × 8 = 16/24 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 3 = 24,
4/8 = 4 × 3/8 × 3 = 12/24 - Add the two like fractions:
16/24 + 12/24 = 16 + 12/24 = 28/24 - 28/24 simplified gives 7/6
- So, 2/3 + 4/8 = 7/6
In mixed form: 11/6
