Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 16 is 48

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 48
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 16 = 48,
    2/3 = 2 × 16/3 × 16 = 32/48
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 3 = 48,
    6/16 = 6 × 3/16 × 3 = 18/48
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    32/48 + 18/48 = 32 + 18/48 = 50/48
  5. 50/48 simplified gives 25/24
  6. So, 2/3 + 6/16 = 25/24
