Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 9 is 36

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 36
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 9 = 36,
    3/4 = 3 × 9/4 × 9 = 27/36
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 4 = 36,
    3/9 = 3 × 4/9 × 4 = 12/36
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    27/36 + 12/36 = 27 + 12/36 = 39/36
  5. 39/36 simplified gives 13/12
