Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 42
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 7 = 42,
    3/6 = 3 × 7/6 × 7 = 21/42
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 6 = 42,
    5/7 = 5 × 6/7 × 6 = 30/42
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    21/42 + 30/42 = 21 + 30/42 = 51/42
  5. 51/42 simplified gives 17/14
  6. So, 3/6 + 5/7 = 17/14
    In mixed form: 13/14
