Steps for comparing fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 3 and 15 is 15
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 15 - For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 5 = 15,
1/3 = 1 × 5/3 × 5 = 5/15 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 15 × 1 = 15,
4/15 = 4 × 1/15 × 1 = 4/15 - Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
- 5/15 > 4/15 or 1/3 > 4/15
