Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 6 and 7 is 42

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 42
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 7 = 42,
    2/6 = 2 × 7/6 × 7 = 14/42
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 6 = 42,
    4/7 = 4 × 6/7 × 6 = 24/42
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 14/42 < 24/42 or 2/6 < 4/7
