Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 5 is 20

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 20
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 5 = 20,
    3/4 = 3 × 5/4 × 5 = 15/20
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 4 = 20,
    50/5 = 50 × 4/5 × 4 = 200/20
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 15/20 < 200/20 or 3/4 < 50/5
