Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 14 and 6 is 42

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 42
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 14 × 3 = 42,
    4/14 = 4 × 3/14 × 3 = 12/42
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 7 = 42,
    4/6 = 4 × 7/6 × 7 = 28/42
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 12/42 < 28/42 or 4/14 < 4/6
