Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 15 and 8 is 120
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 15 × 8 = 120,
    4/15 = 4 × 8/15 × 8 = 32/120
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 15 = 120,
    3/8 = 3 × 15/8 × 15 = 45/120
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 32/120 < 45/120 or 4/15 < 3/8
