Steps for adding fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 3 and 4 is 12
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 12 - For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 4 = 12,
1/3 = 1 × 4/3 × 4 = 4/12 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 4 × 3 = 12,
2/4 = 2 × 3/4 × 3 = 6/12 - Add the two like fractions:
4/12 + 6/12 = 4 + 6/12 = 10/12 - 10/12 simplified gives 5/6
- So, 1/3 + 2/4 = 5/6
