Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 8 is 24

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 24
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 8 = 24,
    1/3 = 1 × 8/3 × 8 = 8/24
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 3 = 24,
    6/8 = 6 × 3/8 × 3 = 18/24
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    8/24 + 18/24 = 8 + 18/24 = 26/24
  5. 26/24 simplified gives 13/12
  6. So, 1/3 + 6/8 = 13/12
