Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 5 and 10 is 10

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 10
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 5 × 2 = 10,
    1/5 = 1 × 2/5 × 2 = 2/10
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 10 × 1 = 10,
    8/10 = 8 × 1/10 × 1 = 8/10
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    2/10 + 8/10 = 2 + 8/10 = 10/10
  5. 10/10 simplified gives 1/1
  6. So, 1/5 + 8/10 = 1/1
