Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 21 and 12 is 84
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 21 × 4 = 84,
    12/21 = 12 × 4/21 × 4 = 48/84
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 12 × 7 = 84,

  4. Add the two fractions:
    48/84 + 42/84 = 48 + 42/84 = 90/84
