Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 12 and 9 is 36

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 36

    2/12 = 2 × 3/12 × 3 = 6/36
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 4 = 36,
    2/9 = 2 × 4/9 × 4 = 8/36
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    6/36 + 8/36 = 6 + 8/36 = 14/36
  5. 14/36 simplified gives 7/18
  6. So, 2/12 + 2/9 = 7/18
