2/20 = 2 × 2/20 × 2 = 4/40 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 40 × 1 = 40,
1/40 = 1 × 1/40 × 1 = 1/40 - Add the two like fractions:
4/40 + 1/40 = 4 + 1/40 = 5/40 - 5/40 simplified gives 1/8
- So, 2/20 + 1/40 = 1/8
