Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 9 is 9

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 9
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 3 = 9,
    2/3 = 2 × 3/3 × 3 = 6/9
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 1 = 9,
    1/9 = 1 × 1/9 × 1 = 1/9
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    6/9 + 1/9 = 6 + 1/9 = 7/9
  5. So, 2/3 + 1/9 = 7/9
