Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 20

    2/4 = 2 × 5/4 × 5 = 10/20
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 4 = 20,
    2/5 = 2 × 4/5 × 4 = 8/20
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    10/20 + 8/20 = 10 + 8/20 = 18/20
  5. 18/20 simplified gives 9/10
