Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 7 is 28

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 28
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 7 = 28,
    2/4 = 2 × 7/4 × 7 = 14/28
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 4 = 28,
    3/7 = 3 × 4/7 × 4 = 12/28
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    14/28 + 12/28 = 14 + 12/28 = 26/28
  5. 26/28 simplified gives 13/14
  6. So, 2/4 + 3/7 = 13/14
