Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 4 and 9 is 36

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 36
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 4 × 9 = 36,
    2/4 = 2 × 9/4 × 9 = 18/36
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 4 = 36,
    8/9 = 8 × 4/9 × 4 = 32/36
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    18/36 + 32/36 = 18 + 32/36 = 50/36
  5. 50/36 simplified gives 25/18
  6. So, 2/4 + 8/9 = 25/18
    In mixed form: 17/18
