Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 5 and 7 is 35

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 35
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 5 × 7 = 35,
    2/5 = 2 × 7/5 × 7 = 14/35
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 5 = 35,
    6/7 = 6 × 5/7 × 5 = 30/35
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    14/35 + 30/35 = 14 + 30/35 = 44/35
  5. So, 2/5 + 6/7 = 44/35
    In mixed form: 19/35
