Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 8 and 7 is 56

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 56
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 8 × 7 = 56,
    2/8 = 2 × 7/8 × 7 = 14/56
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 8 = 56,
    1/7 = 1 × 8/7 × 8 = 8/56
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    14/56 + 8/56 = 14 + 8/56 = 22/56
  5. 22/56 simplified gives 11/28
  6. So, 2/8 + 1/7 = 11/28
