Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 12 and 5 is 60

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 60
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 12 × 5 = 60,
    3/12 = 3 × 5/12 × 5 = 15/60
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 5 × 12 = 60,
    4/5 = 4 × 12/5 × 12 = 48/60
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    15/60 + 48/60 = 15 + 48/60 = 63/60
  5. 63/60 simplified gives 21/20
  6. So, 3/12 + 4/5 = 21/20
    In mixed form: 11/20
