Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 21 and 6 is 42
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 21 × 2 = 42,
    4/21 = 4 × 2/21 × 2 = 8/42
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 6 × 7 = 42,
    2/6 = 2 × 7/6 × 7 = 14/42
  4. Add the two fractions:
    8/42 + 14/42 = 8 + 14/42 = 22/42
  5. After reducing the fraction, the answer is 11/21
