Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 12 is 12
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 4 = 12,
    4/3 = 4 × 4/3 × 4 = 16/12
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 12 × 1 = 12,
    9/12 = 9 × 1/12 × 1 = 9/12
  4. Add the two fractions:
    16/12 + 9/12 = 16 + 9/12 = 25/12
  5. In mixed form: 21/12
