Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 5 and 10 is 10

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 10
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 5 × 2 = 10,
    4/5 = 4 × 2/5 × 2 = 8/10
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 10 × 1 = 10,
    6/10 = 6 × 1/10 × 1 = 6/10
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    8/10 + 6/10 = 8 + 6/10 = 14/10
  5. 14/10 simplified gives 7/5
  6. So, 4/5 + 6/10 = 7/5
    In mixed form: 12/5
