Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 6 and 8 is 24

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 24
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 4 = 24,
    4/6 = 4 × 4/6 × 4 = 16/24
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 3 = 24,
    2/8 = 2 × 3/8 × 3 = 6/24
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    16/24 + 6/24 = 16 + 6/24 = 22/24
  5. 22/24 simplified gives 11/12
  6. So, 4/6 + 2/8 = 11/12
