Steps for adding fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 10 and 7 is 70
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 70 - For the 1st fraction, since 10 × 7 = 70,
5/10 = 5 × 7/10 × 7 = 35/70 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 10 = 70,
2/7 = 2 × 10/7 × 10 = 20/70 - Add the two like fractions:
35/70 + 20/70 = 35 + 20/70 = 55/70 - 55/70 simplified gives 11/14
- So, 5/10 + 2/7 = 11/14
