Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 8 and 14 is 56
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 8 × 7 = 56,
    5/8 = 5 × 7/8 × 7 = 35/56
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 14 × 4 = 56,
    2/14 = 2 × 4/14 × 4 = 8/56
  4. Add the two fractions:
    35/56 + 8/56 = 35 + 8/56 = 43/56
