Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 12 and 7 is 84

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 84

    6/12 = 6 × 7/12 × 7 = 42/84
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 12 = 84,
    4/7 = 4 × 12/7 × 12 = 48/84
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    42/84 + 48/84 = 42 + 48/84 = 90/84
  5. 90/84 simplified gives 15/14
  6. So, 6/12 + 4/7 = 15/14
