Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 9 and 12 is 36

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 36
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 9 × 4 = 36,
    6/9 = 6 × 4/9 × 4 = 24/36
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 12 × 3 = 36,
    3/12 = 3 × 3/12 × 3 = 9/36
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    24/36 + 9/36 = 24 + 9/36 = 33/36
  5. 33/36 simplified gives 11/12
  6. So, 6/9 + 3/12 = 11/12
