Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 12 and 16 is 48

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 48
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 12 × 4 = 48,
    7/12 = 7 × 4/12 × 4 = 28/48
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 3 = 48,
    4/16 = 4 × 3/16 × 3 = 12/48
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    28/48 + 12/48 = 28 + 12/48 = 40/48
  5. 40/48 simplified gives 5/6
  6. So, 7/12 + 4/16 = 5/6
