Steps for adding fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 12 and 7 is 84

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 84
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 12 × 7 = 84,
    8/12 = 8 × 7/12 × 7 = 56/84
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 7 × 12 = 84,
    1/7 = 1 × 12/7 × 12 = 12/84
  4. Add the two like fractions:
    56/84 + 12/84 = 56 + 12/84 = 68/84
  5. 68/84 simplified gives 17/21
  6. So, 8/12 + 1/7 = 17/21
