Steps for comparing fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 2 and 9 is 18
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 18 - For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 9 = 18,
12 = 1 × 92 × 9 = 918 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 2 = 18,
19 = 1 × 29 × 2 = 218 - Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
- 918 > 218 or 12 > 19
