Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 2 and 25 is 50

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 50
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 25 = 50,
    1/2 = 1 × 25/2 × 25 = 25/50
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 25 × 2 = 50,
    20/25 = 20 × 2/25 × 2 = 40/50
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 25/50 < 40/50 or 1/2 < 20/25
