Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 2 and 70 is 70

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 70
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 35 = 70,
    1/2 = 1 × 35/2 × 35 = 35/70
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 70 × 1 = 70,
    3/70 = 3 × 1/70 × 1 = 3/70
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 35/70 > 3/70 or 1/2 > 3/70
