Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 2 and 27 is 54

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 54
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 27 = 54,
    1/2 = 1 × 27/2 × 27 = 27/54
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 27 × 2 = 54,
    8/27 = 8 × 2/27 × 2 = 16/54
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 27/54 > 16/54 or 1/2 > 8/27
