Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 2 and 45 is 90

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 90
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 45 = 90,
    1/2 = 1 × 45/2 × 45 = 45/90
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 45 × 2 = 90,
    8/45 = 8 × 2/45 × 2 = 16/90
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 45/90 > 16/90 or 1/2 > 8/45
