Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 2 and 63 is 126

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 126
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 2 × 63 = 126,
    1/2 = 1 × 63/2 × 63 = 63/126
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 63 × 2 = 126,
    8/63 = 8 × 2/63 × 2 = 16/126
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 63/126 > 16/126 or 1/2 > 8/63
