Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 27 and 70 is 1890

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 1890
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 27 × 70 = 1890,
    1/27 = 1 × 70/27 × 70 = 70/1890
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 70 × 27 = 1890,
    4/70 = 4 × 27/70 × 27 = 108/1890
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 70/1890 < 108/1890 or 1/27 < 4/70
