Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 28 and 90 is 1260

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 1260
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 28 × 45 = 1260,
    1/28 = 1 × 45/28 × 45 = 45/1260
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 90 × 14 = 1260,
    56/90 = 56 × 14/90 × 14 = 784/1260
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 45/1260 < 784/1260 or 1/28 < 56/90
