Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 35 and 9 is 315

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 315
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 35 × 9 = 315,
    1/35 = 1 × 9/35 × 9 = 9/315
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 35 = 315,
    7/9 = 7 × 35/9 × 35 = 245/315
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 9/315 < 245/315 or 1/35 < 7/9
