Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 5 and 63 is 315

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 315
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 5 × 63 = 315,
    1/5 = 1 × 63/5 × 63 = 63/315
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 63 × 5 = 315,
    7/63 = 7 × 5/63 × 5 = 35/315
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 63/315 > 35/315 or 1/5 > 7/63
