Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 5 and 20 is 20

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 20
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 5 × 4 = 20,
    1/5 = 1 × 4/5 × 4 = 4/20
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 20 × 1 = 20,
    9/20 = 9 × 1/20 × 1 = 9/20
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 4/20 < 9/20 or 1/5 < 9/20
