Steps for comparing fractions
- Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
LCM of 6 and 9 is 18
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 18 - For the 1st fraction, since 6 × 3 = 18,
16 = 1 × 36 × 3 = 318 - Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 2 = 18,
69 = 6 × 29 × 2 = 1218 - Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
- 318 < 1218 or 16 < 69
