Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 98 and 8 is 392

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 392
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 98 × 4 = 392,
    1/98 = 1 × 4/98 × 4 = 4/392
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 8 × 49 = 392,
    3/8 = 3 × 49/8 × 49 = 147/392
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 4/392 < 147/392 or 1/98 < 3/8
