Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 15 and 12 is 60
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 15 × 4 = 60,
    10/15 = 10 × 4/15 × 4 = 40/60
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 12 × 5 = 60,
    28/12 = 28 × 5/12 × 5 = 140/60
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 40/60 < 140/60 or 10/15 < 28/12
