Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 20 and 54 is 540

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 540
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 20 × 27 = 540,
    10/20 = 10 × 27/20 × 27 = 270/540
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 54 × 10 = 540,
    30/54 = 30 × 10/54 × 10 = 300/540
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 270/540 < 300/540 or 10/20 < 30/54
