Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 27 and 16 is 432

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 432
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 27 × 16 = 432,
    10/27 = 10 × 16/27 × 16 = 160/432
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 27 = 432,
    10/16 = 10 × 27/16 × 27 = 270/432
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 160/432 < 270/432 or 10/27 < 10/16
