Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 16 is 48

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 48
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 16 = 48,
    10/3 = 10 × 16/3 × 16 = 160/48
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 16 × 3 = 48,
    28/16 = 28 × 3/16 × 3 = 84/48
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 160/48 > 84/48 or 10/3 > 28/16
