Steps for comparing fractions

  1. Find the least common denominator or LCM of the two denominators:
    LCM of 3 and 9 is 9

    Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with denominator 9
  2. For the 1st fraction, since 3 × 3 = 9,
    10/3 = 10 × 3/3 × 3 = 30/9
  3. Likewise, for the 2nd fraction, since 9 × 1 = 9,
    8/9 = 8 × 1/9 × 1 = 8/9
  4. Since the denominators are now the same, the fraction with the bigger numerator is the greater fraction
  5. 30/9 > 8/9 or 10/3 > 8/9
